"Living
on the Island of Bopp Thior, north of Saint - Louis, (an island which
is fast becoming desert), in a tent on a wooden platform with a thatched
roof, listening to the sounds of the river, observing the pelicans and
egrets, the local fishermen at work and the blue turbaned Mauritanians
transporting their goods and sheep in their river boats, gave me plenty
of time to think and work."
